BRAMSNET Second Meeting

8-9 May, 2006

CPTEC/INPE - Cachoeira Paulista - SP - BRAZIL

During two days, the participants presented the main results obtained since the BRAMSNET First Meeting (2005, fourth quarter): Improvements for weather forecast, pollution studies, deforestation studies, climate studies were some of many issues argued in the meeting.

Some presentations were about the experience from BRAMS use in regional projects like hidrological studies, precipitation and floods forecast, pollutants dispersion. Some difficulties in BRAMS tunning were cited.

Special attention was given to BRAMS code dissemination. Some difficulties found in BRAMS installation, setup and running were pointed. As result, some directions to become the BRAMS more easy to install and run were defined. Some features as webpage services, documentation, tutorials, support were argued too.

At the final of the meeting, a Roadmap to BRAMS' future and the new features and improvements to BRAMS 4.0 Version were defined.

BRAMS Roadmap:

The main result of the BRAMSNET Second Meeting was the definition of a roadmap to BRAMS.

To the BRAMS 4.0 Version (late June - early July, 2006):

  • Update to the RAMS 6.0 Version;
  • Introduce CATT (CARMA radiation with keys to run in IA-32/SX-NEC);
  • Introduce TEB + Chemical;
  • Sequential Optimizations;
  • Microphysics optmized to SX-NEC;
  • Change the RAMSIN to a file in NAMELIST (Fortran 90) format;
  • Include a new partition grid scheme.

To the Future:

  • Grell super-parametrization training;
  • Simplified and elaborated ozone photochemistries; aerosols and cloud microphysics;
  • Dynamic vegetation (GEMTM and IBIS);
  • Improvements in SIB 2.5;
  • Improvements in the turbulence scheme;
  • Coupling a distributed hydrological model;
  • Physical Space Assimilation System (PSAS, short term);
  • Local Ensemble Kalman Filter (LEKF, longterm)
  • Make the BRAMS more easy to new users. Possibilities: to construct a full linux distribution with all the compilers and libraries needed to run the BRAMS, construct RPM packages for BRAMS installation.
  • Collaborative work to improve documentation.
